Der lange Weg nach Hellersdorf

2006/01

It’s a long way from Hackescher Markt in Mitte – where my office was situated then – to Helle Mitte, where I took pictures for an exhibition about the whereabouts of Hellersdorf, where a friend was working at a neighborhood centre. It’s easy to go with U5 from Alexanderplatz to Hellersdorf, but nevertheless it takes half an hour through the boroughs of former Eastern Berlin, nowadays seen as suburban territories. In the day of the GDR the new-built houses were very popular, especially for families because in the old buildings in Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, Lichtenberg or Pankow there were no bathrooms or central heating.
